Asthma Rates in Children are Leveling Off

January 2, 2016 By Schochet

causes of childhood asthma The prevalence of pediatric asthma has leveled off except amongst the poor children.  The overall prevalence increased from 1980 to 2009, and then dipped in 2010, except amongst the poor. A recent study published in Pediatrics hypothesized that the link to poverty could be increased exposure to environmental triggers.

Causes of Childhood Asthma

The causes of childhood asthma are not always clear and can vary from child to child. Generally, a child with asthma has developed an over sensitive immune system that causes the airways to swell and produce excess mucus. Some known causes of asthma include:

  • Genetics
  • Environmental factors such as air pollution or cigarette smoke
  • Airway infections at a very young age (Respiratory Syncytial Virus – RSV)
  • Exposure to certain irritants and airborne triggers
  • Respiratory infections
